Sandy Hook Tragedy Highlights the Need for Increased Security at Schools

December 14, 2012 is a date that people across the United States will never forget. That Friday morning, at approximately 9:30 a.m., a 20-year-old gunman named Adam Lanza walked into Sandy Hook, a Newtown, Connecticut, elementary school and opened fire.

The massacre, which lasted less than five minutes, claimed the lives of twenty children and six adult staff members. Lanza concluded his deadly rampage by shooting himself as authorities arrived on the scene.

Although no words can even begin to describe the horror that the victims went through, this event does highlight the importance of doing everything possible to increase safety in places where large numbers of people are congregated. One of the ways to do this is to have camera systems installed throughout a building.

One of the many great things about this type of system is that advancements in technology mean the picture captured is of better quality than ever before. Whether you own a business or are an elementary school principal, you should rest assured that everyone ranging from employees to students are kept safe.

Another benefit of a video security system is that you can view the footage being captured remotely. Long gone are the days when you had to be sitting in front of a computer to monitor what was going on in your place of work. Next time you are at a conference or out-of-town meeting, all you have to do is access the internet to see what is happening back home.

Although it would certainly be unfair to say that a single device like a camera would have prevented the killing of so many innocent people at Sandy Hook, it is safe to state that peace of mind is not always a given in this day and age. However, by calling a company in your area to speak about commercial camera system sales, you can at least be sure that you are taking a step toward protecting the lives of those you care about.
