New Jersey Home Invasion Caught on Nanny Cam

A recent home invasion in Millburn, New Jersey, has raised the profile of the utility of a video security system and what it can do to help deter and aid in the prosecution of home invaders (as well as abusive nannies). The victim of the invasion, an unidentified mother of two, was at home with her two children when a man burst in and violently beat her and threw her down the basement stairs. The intruder was later caught and is currently on trial for attempted murder, burglary, and endangering the welfare of a child.

The entire incident was caught on tape, as Shawn Custis broke into the house and immediately assaulted the victim in full view of one of her children. The footage was later uploaded to the internet and watched by millions of people. It will also be used in Custis’ trial.

The crime reinforces the point that you can never be too diligent in protecting your family from a violent intruder. Some things to keep in mind when fortifying your home against home invasion are:

  • Ensure that all of your locks and dead bolts are in working order and have a one-inch throw.
  • Keep vegetation around your house trimmed so that burglars cannot conceal themselves.
  • Light your porch and outdoor areas sufficiently.
  • Install a home security camera, which can catch any illegal acts and make it easier to prosecute those who violate the safety of you and your family.

We highly recommend that you consult with an Atlanta alarm company to find out which video security options are available for your home. For more information, contact American Alarm at (770) 645-0061.
